Filling the Void: 49ers in Need of New Head Coach

Now that the hope for a return to the playoffs has been well and truly crushed for the San Francisco 49ers, the front office has decided to do something they should have done weeks ago and that is fire Coach Mike Singletary.  At the beginning of the season I had high hopes for the team, they looked like a playoff caliber team.  In the preseason they went undefeated and all of the pieces seemed to fit together.  Then the regular season started and everything fell apart.  They went to 0-5, our quarterback Alex Smith got injured and Troy Smith took over finally getting the momentum going and getting us the wins we so desperately needed to keep any hope alive.  Then the strangest thing started to happen Mike Singletary started to play around with the quarterback position and after Troy Smith got us wins, he went back to Alex Smith who played well and then when he got a bad loss, Singletary went back to Troy Smith who didn't win the game against the Chargers.  It seemed like everything Singletary did by the end of his tenure was just forcing the 49er's Front Office to fire him.  I'm personally glad that he is gone and we can go about finding a new replacement at the end of the season, one who can take the talent that is evident on the field and make the San Francisco 49ers a playoff team for the first time since 2002.

Let us take a look at some potential candidates that could be available to the 49ers at the position of Head Coach.  There is Jason Garrett, the current head coach of the Cowboys, who has done some miraculous things for them.  They were 1-7 before Jerry Jones fired Wade Phillips and promoted Garrett to the position of head coach.  Jason Garrett has been able to help Kitna play at the quarterback postion when prior to Tony Romo's season ending injury he hadn't had much play time.  During Garrett's tenure as head coach the Cowboys are 4-3.  This shows that he has obvious ability to coach a team filled with talent and get them to play for him.  The 49ers should try to get Garrett if they can at the position of Head Coach if Jerry Jones decides on going a different route at the end of the season.  It would be very interesting to see how Jason Garrett would be able to handle the pressure of rebuilding a team that is staked with talent but there hasn't been anyone in the leadership position who can handle the pressure of making all of the parts work together as a whole.

While I am personally not a huge fan of Stanford athletics, even I have to admit that Jim Harbaugh is an amazing coach who has led Stanford to a 11-1 season and an appearance in the Discover Orange Bowl on January 3rd.  Harbaugh is known for being a head coach who is highly involved in the play calling which as we can see from this past season the 49ers could really use a coach like that.  His brother currently coaches the Raven's and is finding considerable success with that team.  There are quite a few things that can help sweeten the pot for Harbaugh and have him seriously consider leaving a good position with Stanford and making the leap to the NFL, the biggest being that with the probable high pick that the 49ers will get in this years draft, Harbaugh could pick his current quarterback from Stanford.  As the 49ers are most likely parting ways with Alex Smith at the end of the season this would be a great incentive for him because he would have a player who knows the style of the coach and already respects the coach.  It would be very interesting to see if the 49ers Front Office decides to go with a coach from the College level but I would not be disappointed to hear that they had hired Jim Harbaugh for the job, he brings many good qualities to the table and would be an asset to the team.

These are just two of the potential people in line for the position and these are the two that I would most like to see get the job of head coach of the 49ers.  I hope you enjoyed this post and keep following my love affair with sports.
