UConn: The Streak is Over

As everyone may have heard tonight Stanford beat UConn 71-59 to break the 90 game winning streak that made history.  While I applaud Stanford for the excellent game they had tonight and the fact that they were able to go beyond themselves to defeat UConn, we cannot forget how great of a team UConn is.  This loss will motivate them to play better and harder and their next opponent is going to have a difficult time keeping up with them.  Coach Geno Auriemma is one of the best coaches out there.  He has created a work ethic and drive in a program that prior to his tenure was not nationally ranked or known.  Now everyone knows about UConn.  Him and his program have shined a light onto Women's basketball that will hopefully show people how amazing female basketball players are.  True the women's game is a bit slower then the men's but if you look at the score that is comparable to the average score found in men's games.

I had the pleasure for the past two years of watching Coach Geno in action and to take in his coaching style.  I would say that he is tougher then most coaches of men's programs, he never lets up and doesn't think that simply because the athletes are women does it mean that they can't perform on the court like men.  There is a reason that UConn had a 90 game winning streak and while that streak was made with the players on the court, it in all reality would never have happened had he not been the coach of the Huskies.  I admire the way that Coach Geno coaches his team and the fact that you can tell how much he cares for his players and how much he wants them to succeed and prove to the world that female athletes are just as good as men.

The UConn Women's Basketball program has a very storied history of producing amazing athletes that stand out such as Sue Bird, Maya Moore and many more.  Maya Moore currently is a senior on the team and for the past two years she has been invited by the USA Women's National team to play on the team as they went on to win FIBA Worlds this past year.  Maya Moore is an amazing athlete, her body control and the way she moves with the ball is simply breath taking.  Many male athletes could learn ball control and shooting from her.  Sue Bird who now plays for the Seattle Storm is another player who is simply fabulous, she has such poise and understands the flow of the game to perfection.  She is able to make many plays work simply because she understands how the game is supposed to be played and how her team members work with her towards one common goal.  Neither athlete would have learned these skills from anyone but Geno, he has the ability to make great players outstanding.  I personally hope that UConn launches on another streak that will last as long as this current streak has.

I hope you enjoyed this post and keep following my love affair with sports.
