Scandal and Realignment in College Athletics
Wow so much has happened in the past few months in college athletics with the realignments and with the scandal that is rocking Penn State right now. What is going on in the NCAA right now, it seems like it is becoming a free for all and the governing body has no control over what is going with the schools. I really want the president of the NCAA to come forward and make a statement and start acting like the president of one of the most influential sports bodies in the country. More people watch College athletics then all of the other sports combined, so shouldn't college athletics be better governed and shouldn't they want to set examples for the rest of the country, college is supposed to be where you go to learn but now it if you are an athlete it's where you go to get noticed, thus creating the disparity between the ethics of the athletic departments and the rest of us fans.
Look at Penn State, Joe Paterno was told by then graduate assistant that Sandusky had engaged in felony acts with a minor and all Paterno did was tell the athletic director what Sandusky had done. He should have banned Sandusky from all Penn State football facilities and should have gone to the authorities, while yes he did follow the minimal protocol required of his position but still what Sandusky did is criminal and one of the worst crimes someone can do. It seemed that all Penn State and Paterno cared about was getting the most wins in NCAA division I football and now the entire career of Paterno is made to be one hypocritical lie, he is known for having well rounded athletes well one of his athletes and one of his coaches just got indicted for crimes that are not at all part of the scope of being a well rounded person. I think that Penn State needs to just wipe the slate completely clean and get a whole new coaching staff and new AD in to start fixing the mess. Granted though while I know that Paterno should have done more give him this season let him finish, all you are doing will be to harm the players by getting rid of the coach mid way through but after this season make him retire.
Now that we have discussed the Penn State scandal lets discuss the realignments, well it definitely looks like soon there will be power conferences in both basketball and football and not sure how I feel about that. On one hand it gives schools better competition in the conferences on the other hand though what about mid major schools like mine we what chances to actually get far in the tournament and with power conferences that goes away. Granted we aren't there yet and we may never get there but I'm still scared, though I like that the ACC is getting Pitt and Syracuse two good schools for both football and basketball. I know this is seeming very wispy washy but I just have so many views in this that I want to let you the readers see the dilemma that I'm going through as an overall fan of college athletics and then as a fan of the ACC and other bigger conferences, though I really don't want the Big 12 to fall apart, I really like it as a conference and I think the moves they are making to bring in schools are great. It's just sad that all of this realignment is happening at once that I can't even keep straight which school is moving where and why.
I hope you all enjoyed this post and keep reading my love affair with sports.
