NBA Alert: Yao Ming Retiring

So I know that I had a post last night but this seemed like it required a post of its own instead of lumping it in with my scheduled post on Monday.  Today Yao Ming announced that he was retiring from the NBA after 8 seasons.  Granted this wasn't too surprising considering that he missed most of last season due to foot injuries and he has been plagued with foot issues for the last few years of his career with the Rockets.

Yao Ming was drafted first overall in 2002 by the Rockets and made the NBA huge in China. He was the first major Chinese player to gain major fame in the NBA and now it remains to be seen how the NBA will fair in the foreign market without one of its most known foreign players.  Yao changed the NBA and made it a global sport, before him not too many people really payed attention to foreign players because most times they were not trying to gain a world wide market but now there are games that are being played over seas during the season.

Yao leaves the league being an 8-time All-Star and averaged 9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks, with a field-goal percentage of 52.4 through out his career.  He will be missed on and off the court as a member of the NBA.  I had hoped that with the lockout Yao may have not resorted to retiring because it would have given him more time to heal but he did what he had too and let us all wish Yao a great future outside of the NBA.

I hope you all enjoyed this post and keep reading my love affair with sports.
