Sports Basics Part 1: Football for Girls Wanting to impress their men
The next few blog posts are dedicated to a couple of friends who have requested posts on how best to understand the basics of football, basketball and baseball so that they are able to keep up with the sports conversations that their men have. So ladies sit back relax and enjoy the next three posts as I break down the sports and the best way to find the information so you sound like a pro when you may care nothing about the sport.
Basically football is played in four quarters, with each lasting 15 minutes. Each team has four attempts or as they are called downs to move the ball 10 yards for the first down. When the quarterback passes the ball to a wide receiver or to anyone else on the team those yards are called passing yards and when a player runs with the ball those are called rushing yards. Each touchdown is worth 6 points with the possibility of getting another point by making a field goal or in some cases 2 extra points can be made if you go for a second touch down. If you can't get a touchdown then there is a possibility of making a field goal which is worth 3 points. There are also three different sub teams on every football team, the offensive line, the defensive line and special teams which include the kicker.
Now onto the real substance of this post, how to impress the guy when you don't really know too much about the game; the best piece of advice I can give you as a girl who has used knowledge of sports to impress a guy is if you know what team the guy likes read recaps of games on ESPN. It takes 5 min max and you sound like the queen. For example when I was trying to start a conversation with this one guy that I like, I knew his favorite college football team was Michigan. I read a recap of one of the games and remembered key points such as during that game the quarterback Denard Robinson broke rushing and passing yards records for Michigan. This type of information is utterly invaluable if you happen to not be with your guy during the game because it makes him think that you watched the game when in reality you spent 5 minutes reading a recap on ESPN.
Another good tip I have is if you happen to be watching the game with your man or potential man, PAY ATTENTION to the REPLAY, I can not stress it enough the replay is your best friend while watching a game especially if there was an amazing play during the replay they slow down the movement so you can catch exactly what happened. This allows you to say something along the lines of hey did you see that great ball fake to a touchdown pass or look at how he blitzed past the defender for a first down. There are so many things that happen during the game that you can't catch everything but the replay helps so much, it has saved me on many occasions when I have missed something and the replay got me back on track. One of my two last tips always know who the head coach, quarterback and main offensive and defensive linemen are. My last tip is during the NFL season take one hour out of every week and listen to Bill Simmons BS Report because he does weekly lines about the weeks coming game. This has helped me so many times since he goes over every single game that week and predicts what will be the outcome, men love this. If you know who Bill Simmons is you are a goddess to them as he is one of the main sports columnists from ESPN.
I hope these tips will help you and be on the lookout for my next post on Basketball. I hope you keep following my love affair with sports.
